The humble scarab
The dung beetle, as seen here on my morning walk today, was considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians. 'The scarab embodies the God Khepri who propels the sun out of the darkness of the underworld and across the sky.' (Quirke 35-6) This imagery is based on the dung beetle gathering a ball of dung which sometimes can be so big that the beetle is forced into almost a vertical position displaying a persistence and resoluteness of mind that the Egyptians so admired.

Hungry birdie
This starling was attacking the birdfeeder this morning. I am not particularly fond of starlings as they arrive in a murmuration and eat everything in sight. It is quite rare to see one on its own. I can bet he didn't tell his mates where the free food was!!!!

Deer seeking loving family
This deer and I keep running into each other. One thing is for sure- she is terrified of humans. As I was taking this photo she was trembling within an inch of her life. They used to be three- a stag, the roe deer and a young deer. There seems to be only the roe deer left. What happened to the others? The hound usually finds deer remains in the woods long before I do (he smells a bit better) but we've not come across anything recently. The roe deer is looking a bit old- her coat is dry and grey in parts. Perhaps old age is the reason for the missing stag. But where is the youngster?

Artist Statement: I paint large contemporary oil paintings of woodland scenes, trees, landscapes, animals, seascapes, underwater paintings, tropical fish and koi fish. My oil canvases are affordable and expressionist and slightly art-nouveau in style. My favourite artist apart from myself is Gustav Klimt. I use thick (impasto) paint on 3D – deep edge canvas.
