The devil ate it
I was delighted to finally find a Scabious in the meadow today. Only one though, not an entire field full of them, sadly. How pretty is this tall stemmed, pale lilac flower that stands head and shoulders above all other flowers in the meadow. I spotted it some distance away and as I approached I was thrilled to see it intact- an old legend* has it that the devil eats the plant including the root so as to prevent anyone from benefiting from the medicinal value of this mid to late summer flower.
